About the Biodiversity and Heritage Topics

Biodiversity is our ‘living heritage’ and the small remnants of natural habitat that remain are very precious.

We need to protect, link and expand our natural areas of bush, wetland, coastal and aquatic habitat to improve the chances of survival of our natural ecosystems and their native inhabitants.

Horizons’ role with regard to biodiversity management is a new one under the RMA. We propose to take the initiative and be the lead agency for this.

The proposed One Plan contains rules that stop the destruction of rare and threatened, and at risk habitats. Productive community partnerships are vital to the protection of our living heritage. Horizons also provides funding and advice to fence and protect our top bush remnants and wetlands.

This theme in the proposed One Plan also deals with our historic heritage. While protection of historic heritage is largely a role for local councils, Horizons seeks to ensure that activities we do control do not destroy or damage precious historic resources.
