Rates Remission

All remissions are subject to conditions and criteria so for more information, or to find out if you qualify, please contact us for a copy of our full rates remissions policy or view a brief policy outline here.

Remissions allow you to have a reduction in your rates:

  1. A non-profit organisation, sporting or community group can request a remission on their rates. This must be applied for each year.
  2. Contiguous properties (having common boundaries) that are owned by the same person and are used as a single unit may be excluded from paying Uniform Annual General Charges and Uniform Targeted Rates. Adjoining properties each caring a dwelling do no qualify for contiguous status.
  3. Penalty remissions are only granted in extreme circumstances, mostly if an error has been made. It is the owner's responsibility to notify Horizons of any change of address. This information does not come to us from the City or District Council.
  4. Rates Rebate The Government operates a scheme to assist low income ratepayers with payment of both their regional and city/district council rates.

    If you are a residential ratepayer and your income for the year ended 31 March 2011 was $23,240 plus $500 per dependant or less, you may be eligible for a rebate of up to $580.00.

    Claims for Regional rates rebate must be claimed through your city or district council. Any regional rebates due will then be deducted from your city or district council rates account, not your regional rates account.

    This application must be sent to your district or city council though as Horizons do not adminster the rebate scheme and none of the rebate amount is forwarded to Horizons, for more information visit: www.ratesrebate.govt.nz
