Testing the water… As part of our water management role we collect data from water users through an extensive in-stream monitoring network; measuring river levels and flows. In order to understand these river flows we measure the amount of water abstracted, which allows us to calculate the natural flow of the river. The data from these measurements is sent back to Horizons every hour, via a process called telemetry (using cellphone and radio technology). Our WaterMatters website Our WaterMatters site has been developed to help manage our water resource while allowing the public and water users to benefit from the data we collect. It allows water users to monitor their water use from their home computer – this means no daily trips to the water meter to write down how much they use. The site also allows Horizons to monitor water management zones in order to ensure consistency with our predetermined water resource levels.
