Waitarere Beach Community Weed Control

Proposed Waitarere Beach Community Weed Control & Enhancement Project

Horizons Regional Council, with the Waitarere Beach Progressive & Ratepayers Association (WBPRA) and Horowhenua District Council, wants to finally control an aggressive dune weed (coastal wattle) at Waitarere Beach. We have commissioned an independent report on not only treating this weed but also addressing the wider weed issues in the township and looking at opportunities to enhance the local environment.

The issues and the solution

We are proposing to address the issues of: removing coastal wattle; developing the beach dune environment with plantings and introducing a wider Weedbusters programme; and enhancing the local environment  with fencing, amenity plantings and fish ladders.

You will decide where to spend funding

We propose to raise a rate to fund these activities for up to $25,000 annually.  As this will be rated entirely from within the Waitarere Community, you and only you will decide where and how this funding should be spent.

A Targeted Catchment rate

It is proposed to structure the targeted rate from three community groups within the Catchment. As the beach front residents will derive the most benefit from this proposal they would pay a higher rate.

The proposed rates

In consultation with the WBPRA we are proposing three rates.

These are:

1.      Beach front residents (106) = $138 per annum incl.

2.      Beach residents (751) = $11.50 per annum incl.

3.      Catchment residents (802) = $6 per annum incl.
