Landslide alongside Whanganui River monitored

Horizons Regional Council and Ruapehu District Council are monitoring a landslide on the upper Whanganui River downstream of Taumarunui.

Horizons group manager river management Ramon Strong says the landslide is a result of rainfall last week and is in an area where slope movement has occurred in the past.

“The toe of the landslide has extended part way into the river. However, the river is still flowing freely and we do not anticipate any particular impacts other than some discolouration of the water.

“We will continue to keep an eye on it and work with Ruapehu District Council to ensure river users and landowners are aware of the situation,” he says.
