Local body nominations have closed

Nominations for local body elections are now closed and all but one constituency will need votes to ensure their seats.

Horizons nominations closed at midday today, with the council receiving 22 nominations for 12 seats. A surge of last minute nominations means that all except Manawatu-Rangitikei constituency candidates will need the votes to ensure their seat at the table.

“We’re pleased with the number of candidates this year, and are looking forward to seeing the voting outcome. Both Mr Gordon and Mr McKellar are the only candidates this round to go uncontested,” says electoral officer Mr Craig Grant.

“This year’s candidates are all from a variety of backgrounds, a great asset for democratic decision making which will be heavily concentrated round the core of our business – land, air and water.”

Candidate biographies and further information around the local election process can be found on the Horizons Elections page.

Voting papers will be sent out via post to the public between 16 and 21 September for the public to vote until Election Day on 8 October 2016.

“We encourage everyone in our community to exercise their right to vote, and really get involved. It’s your community so make your vote count,” says Mr Grant.
