Annual river scheme meetings coming up

Horizons Regional Council is inviting ratepayers who contribute to the Powera and Tutaenui river management schemes to attend upcoming annual general meetings (AGM).

Horizons area engineer Wayne Spencer says the meetings provide the opportunity to hear how the scheme performed over the past year, as well as what the work programme and budget for the year ahead looks like.

“One of the most important topics that we’ll present on for both schemes is new dam surveillance and compliance costs,” says Mr Spencer.

“This will have an impact on scheme rates. We encourage people to attend so they can hear the information first hand. For the Tutaenui scheme we’ll also present the results of flood plain modelling undertaken in the area.”

Mr Spencer says the meetings provides the opportunity for the community to meet David Cotton, chairman of the Catchment Operations Committee, and Horizons engineers who are involved in the schemes.

“There will be ample opportunity for people to ask questions and discuss any issues they may have, so come along and let us know what you think,” says Mr Spencer.

Mr Spencer manages four river and drainage schemes in the Rangitikei catchment. Each scheme provides river control, erosion protection, and land drainage services to enhance the safety, economic viability and prosperity of regional communities.

Ratepayers are encouraged to come along to the following meetings:

Porewa Scheme meeting, Tuesday 28 March, 7pm at Town Hall, Hunterville
Tutaenui Scheme meeting, Monday 3 April, 7pm at Friendship Hall, Marton
