Fire at Horizons depot overnight

A fire at the Horizons Regional Council depot in Levin overnight has caused damage to property, equipment and vehicles.

Chief executive Michael McCartney says Horizons was alerted to the fire in the early hours of Friday morning.

“Emergency services attended the scene, put it out, and are now in the process of determining what was the cause of the fire,” he says.

“While there has been considerable damage to property, equipment and vehicles, the main thing is that nobody was hurt.

“We have been in contact with Horowhenua District Council this morning and are working with them to find alternate arrangements for our staff. We realise this will cause a level of business disruption but we will do our best to minimise the impact.”

Mr McCartney says a full inventory of what has been damaged will be undertaken today.

“At this stage we know some plant and equipment has been destroyed. Fortunately, our boat that undertakes monitoring on Lake Horowhenua was not on site and will be able to continue business as usual.”

Horizons has three dedicated staff who work out of the Levin depot and undertake pest control in the district. Staff from across the organisation also use the facility for equipment storage.
