Horizons Regional Council elects Nikki Riley as chair

Horizons Regional Council has elected Cr Nikki Riley to be chair for the next term of council.

Councillors were sworn in for the next triennium following a pōwhiri in Palmerston North today, after which they selected their chair.
 
Cr Riley told the meeting she would be chair of a council that listens, learns and leads with purpose at a time when central government ministries may be merging and resource management legislation was being reformed.
 
“We are at a time of profound change, nationally and regionally. What we deliver around this table for the next three years will not only define our reputation, but the future of regional government.
 
“I believe this council has both the capability and responsibility to lead through the reform with clarity, collaboration and courage. Horizons must be an active partner in this reform.
 
“My vision is for Horizons to become a strategically enabling regional council which uses science, data and people to empower action. A council that sets clear achievable priorities and delivers on them with precision. A council trusted by farmers, iwi, hapū, urban ratepayers and central government.
 
“We must work side by side with iwi and hapū, district councils, government ministers, and other organisations which share our goals.”
 
Cr Fiona Gordon was elected as deputy chair. Horizons Regional Council is made up of:

• Sally Dryland (Tararua)
• Luka Jansen and Hamish Easton (Horowhenua)
