MARINE AND BEACH THREAT FOR EAST COAST OF NORTH ISLAND #2

The tsunami warning and subsequent evacuation of Herbertville and Akitio has been reduced to a marine and beach threat.

Horizons Regional Council Emergency Operation Centre controller Craig Grant says residents in the Tararua coastal areas can now return home, but they are asked to remain on alert.

“Aftershocks from the Hamner Springs 7.5 quake that struck at 12.02am are expected to continue throughout the day and these can still trigger tsunami warnings,” says Mr Grant.

“If you experience a long or strong aftershock, or see a sudden rise or fall in the sea level move immediate to the nearest high ground, or as far inland as you can.

“We recommend that people continue to listen to the TV and/or radio for updates.

“For anybody travelling outside of the Region please be advised that train services on the main trunk line south of Palmerston North have been suspended until further notice. The Interislander Ferry service is also currently inoperable.

“Our Region continues to experience widespread and significant power outages due to the earthquake. Restoration times can be found on both Powerco’s and Electra’s websites.
