Moutoa floodgates update

Current river levels and flood modelling have shown that the Moutoa floodgates are currently operating at a level that does not require an opening.

As some rainfall is still expected throughout the catchment today, Horizons staff will continue to monitor the situation and be on standby for an opening.

It is important to note that opening the gates releases floodwaters from the river system, draining across 10km of floodway before releasing into the sea at Foxton. We acknowledge that there has been a lot of surface flooding over the past few days, however that is flooding on lowland rather than water that has come down from the ranges and into our river systems. Opening the floodgates has no effect on what happens further upstream. An opening protects people and property downstream of Moutoa.
