Public health warning - Makino Stream and Oroua River

Horizons is advising that public health warnings are in place following a significant discharge of effluent into the Makino Stream in Feilding.

Horizons Regional Council strategy and regulation group manager Dr Nic Peet is advising that public health warnings are in place following a significant discharge of effluent into the Makino Stream in Feilding.

“Around 7pm last night three Horizons pollution response officers identified a significant discharge of animal effluent into the Makino Stream near Rata Street, Feilding,” says Dr Peet.

“The source was identified and ordered to stop immediately. Unfortunately effluent had already entered the stormwater system and into the Makino Stream.

“We have spoken with MidCentral Public Health Service and we both have concerns for anyone using the Makino Stream or the Oroua River downstream of Rata Street.

“This includes wading, swimming at popular spots such as Awahuri and Kopane, fishing, and gathering watercress. MidCentral Public Health asks that anyone presenting gastro like symptoms to get in touch with Healthline on 0800 611 116, or contact their GP.

“We also advise caution for water takes in the area if they are for anything other than irrigation.

“Signage is being erected this morning and we ask public to avoid these waterways until the all the clear has been given.”
