Temporary Manawatū River bar marker in place

A temporary bar marker has been placed at the mouth of the Manawatu River at Foxton Beach to assist river users over the coming holiday period.

Horizons Regional Council Senior Emergency Management Advisor – Response, Brendon Ross, who also acts as Manawatū River Harbourmaster, says the previous markers were removed earlier this year.

“This was done due to the dynamic state of the river mouth, which resulted in the markers being in the wrong place most of the time. That movement away from the markers created safety issues for people aiming to cross the bar.”

A physical inspection of the river bar at low tide earlier this week resulted in a temporary bar marker being placed on the riverbank adjected to the bar, acting as a guide for river users travelling across it, says Mr Ross.

“The river mouth channel around the bar is currently very shallow. It is advised people do not attempt to cross the bar unless it is three hours either side of high tide.

“People should also remember the marker is just a guide. It is your responsibility to read the water and make safe decisions. If in doubt, do not attempt to cross the bar.”

Skippers must remember to have the following pin place before attempting a bar crossing:

  • At least two methods of communication on board.
  • File a report with the Foxton Sports Radio team, whose volunteers monitor marine traffic in the area via VHF radio.
  • Ensure everyone on board is wearing an approved and well-fitting lifejacket.

“Our aim is to ensure everyone gets to enjoy the water this summer weather, be it fishing or conducting the various other types of on-water activities, and get home safely,” says Mr Ross.

“All skippers have both a legal and moral responsibility for everyone on board, which includes educating themselves on how to cross bars safely. It is important to know how to read water, and to not venture out if you cannot see the channel.”
