Social Media Guidelines

We respect everyone's right to express their thoughts and opinions and encourage constructive dialogue across the social media channels that we coordinate. However, we reserve the right, at our discretion, to hide or remove any content that violates our page guidelines or various platform policies. Repeat or serious offenders will be blocked. Please follow these guidelines:

  1. Remember that we are here to help. Our social media channels are coordinated and moderated by the communications team at Horizons. We are here to share information about Horizons and will do our best to respond to your queries, comments and (constructive) feedback.
  2. Keep your comments respectful and lawful. Do not post content that is threatening, abusive, offensive, indecent or hateful. These comments will be removed in accordance with the Harmful Digital Communications Act.
  3. Respect privacy. Don't post any personal information (neither your own nor anyone else's). Don’t post content that defames any person or organisation or violates intellectual property rights.
  4. Do not spam us. Don’t share third-party websites or promote yourself. Making the same point over and over either on the same or different posts is also considered spam. If this happens we will leave your first comment but hide the duplicates.
  5. Stay on topic. Keep all commentary relevant to Horizons Regional Council and our work. Only make comments that are relevant to the topic or theme of the post. If you disagree with our view on something and decide to make that point every time we post, your comments will be considered spam.
  6. Do not use any of our channels for local or general electioneering purposes. We will remove any commentary from any individual explicitly relating to their own - or someone else's - nomination, intention to run for Council, or election campaign.
  7. We will remove and not respond to climate change denial posts because the science is now accepted – this includes comments to other users on our posts.
  8. Hostile and/or racist content will be removed. Racism can take many forms, such as jokes or comments that cause offence or hurt; name-calling or verbal abuse; harassment or intimidation, or public commentary that inflames hostility towards certain groups.
Horizons Regional Council values its relationships with all communities in the region, including tangata whenua, and considers itself a willing and active Te Tiriti partner. We like to incorporate te reo Māori into our content. If you see a te reo word or phrase and don't know what it means, you can ask us or head to www.maoridictionary.co.nz to find out.

FURTHER MODERATION PROCESS

Users will be blocked if they breach any of our community guidelines three times. We have the right to block users from our social media communities and follow a three-strike process. However, we will not tolerate anyone who uses our channels to spread malicious information or threatens this organisation, its employees or others. Any users who do will be blocked without warning.

Blocked users will still be able to read content when logged out but will not be able to comment.

If we block you from our social media channels and you think we’ve made a mistake, you can contact us at communications@horizons.govt.nz to seek an explanation.
