Whanganui bus stop improvements

Horizons Regional Council has worked with Whanganui District Council to upgrade 19 bus shelters at key locations around the Whanganui public transport network. The upgrade work involves installing bus shelters with accessibility and lighting improvements, as well as real-time digital information boards. This also included bike racks at a range of these locations and tactile ground surface coverings to ensure our services are accessible for everyone.

We made sure to engage with the nearby residents, and detailed design has been signed off by Waka Kotahi.

Construction began November 2023, with the project completed mid-2024. This upgrade work is funded by central government through Waka Kotahi NZTA’s ‘Transport Choices’ programme, with the aim of making catching the bus easier and more user-friendly.

Learn more about Transport Choices

Under central government's Emissions Reduction Plan, and via the $4.5 billion Climate Emergency Response Fund, councils were invited in 2022 to apply for a share of $350 million of Transport Choices funding.

Waka Kotahi is providing 46 councils with funding to deliver up to 90 projects that will:

  • Deliver strategic cycling/micro-mobility networks;
  • Create walkable neighbourhoods;
  • Support safe, green, and healthy school travel;
  • Make public transport more reliable and easier to use.

We want to remove as many barriers to public transport as possible for our community and are partnering with Whanganui District Council to do this. Removing those barriers will ensure people can access places they need, while creating safer and healther environments for everyone in Whanganui.

We are building on the work already done through the implementation of Te Ngaru The Tide - Whanganui's new high frequency service - innovating streets projects, real-time information and the Transit app. It is all part of our aim to take the community on the journey of why public transport is so important to our social, environmental and economic health.
