Catchment Information
We hold a variety of information about our region's catchments. This includes specific information about catchment context, challenges and values (aka CCCVs). Understanding your catchment is not only a way to better understand the environment you live in, but is a key part of preparing a strong resource consent application. This section brings together information on the environmental context, key challenges, and values of each catchment across the Horizons region — including water quality, land use pressures, and natural and cultural values specific to your area.
Catchment context, challenges and values
Catchment context, challenges and values (aka CCCVs) are a compilation of information about a river catchment, including the state of the catchment's wai māori (freshwater), key landform information, and local community values. They are how someone can link their farming or growing operation to the freshwater of the catchment they operate in. They help people to identify the best actions to achieve the current environmental outcomes for a catchment. The CCCV is made up of three parts:
Context. This is the key information about the catchment.
Challenges. These are the threats facing freshwater and the identified values in the catchment.
Values. These are the thing about a catchment that are important to the community.
Each CCCV contains the following information:
This will include the following information relevant to the catchment:
Existing information on landforms, soil, climate, wai māori (freshwater), significant species and ecosystems, contaminants, and sites of significance to the local community
Information regarding tangata whenua, including iwi management plans where they exist
Freshwater rules and policies from relevant legislation, such as the One Plan, National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management and Resource Management Act.
What the community values in, and their visions for, their waterways (via links to freshwater management units).
The uniqueness of each catchment means each catchment context is different.

We have developed a web-based map which makes it easy to find the catchment context for your area. If you're a farmer or grower, it makes it easy to find catchment information specific to you and your operation.
The migration between our old and new websites means there are currently broken links on this map. We are in the process of fixing this, and will update this webpage when it is fixed.

We developed a series of training modules for freshwater farm plan certifier training. However, these modules also serve as excellent explainers about different aspects of catchments and how to operate within them. They are especially helpful for farmers and growers looking for more information about things such as nutrient management, fish passage and erosion control.
