Pekapeka Bat
New Zealand's only native land mammal
There are two species the long-tailed bat and the short-tailed bat, and you can find both in the Horizons region.
Each species has vastly different ways of feeding. Long tailed bats hunt in the air for flying invertebrates, while the short tailed bats are omnivores and scurry on the forest floor using their folder wings like front legs to find their food of insects, fruit, nectar and pollen.
