Fungi are neither plants nor animal
A diverse kingdom of organisms including mushrooms, molds, and yeasts, that are separate from plants and animals. Lacking chlorophyll, they do not photosynthesise. Instead, they absorb nutrients from their surroundings by secreting digestive enzymes and are vital as nature's primary recyclers.
Most terrestrial (land) plants have beneficial or mutual relationships with fungi. This relationship means that fungi have a beneficial role in the health of our soils since healthy soils, mean healthy plants.
New Zaeland's $50 note is the only bank note in the world to feature a fungus called the blue pinkgill (werewere-kokako).
