Closed Kanorau Koiora Taketake Indigenous Biodiversity Contestable Fund

Do you have a biodiversity-focused project in your local community that involves others? We're here to help!

You can apply to our contestable fund when it is open for applications - from late March to early May.

Outside of that window our friendly team of biodiversity advisors can still help with advice and ideas to help get you started or progress your project. We can also help to connect you with other groups who are doing similar work.

The purpose of the grant is to 'restore and protect indigenous biodiversity and support connections between nature and people'.

These connections include biodiversity-focused projects that support the regeneration and continuation of mātauranga Māori.

Your project should have clear benefit to biodiversity and involve more people than just the landowner(s).

You can apply for 1-3 years of funding.

Before you apply you must check the eligibility criteria. For example, this grant cannot fund wages or travel expenses, and your project must be non-profit making.

Management Plan template and guide

Before applying, you should have a clear understanding of your biodiversity project and the funding required to support it. Medium to large‑scale projects, or those involving multiple activities, may benefit from our management plan template and an accompanying guide.

We also have planting guides and other information that may be useful.

For the template - Please email our biodiversity advisors at BiodiversityCommunityTeam@horizons.govt.nz to ask for this editable word document and any other information and advice that you may require.
