Makino gates activated due to heavy rain
07 September 2026 - 01:05 pmDue to the large amount of rain fallen in Manawatū overnight, Horizons Regional Council has activated the Makino gates in Feilding.
Activating the gates will relieve pressure in the Makino stream and move water into the Kiwitea stream, away from the Feilding township.
Horizons Regional Council incident controller David Neal says we are supporting Manawatū District Council to monitor the situation.
Our river management teams are out looking at flood assets while monitoring the region’s river levels, he says.
“Landowners in the Makino spillways were contacted today to remove stock prior to the activation."

“Unfortunately, Horizons’ river level flood forecast graphs are not displaying properly on our website but we are working quickly to get this remedied.
“In the meantime, we want to reassure the community that we are actively monitoring the impacts of the weather on our waterways.
“All of our other flood response and management tools remain operational and this includes our IVR system, so if river levels do get to warning level, they will call out.”
“If you have any concerns about your property please get in contact with your local city or district council in the first instance, or you can call Horizons on 0508 800 800.”
