Opportunity for teachers to take action on sustainability

Horizons Regional Council would like to invite teachers from early childhood education centres, primary and secondary schools, including kura kaupapa Māori to attend a free ‘Taking Action on Sustainability’ hui at Te Manawa, Palmerston North on Weds 30 August between 9am-4pm.

Sarah Williams, senior environmental educator says Horizons has been looking at ways in which they can support teachers in sustainability mahi.

“The hui is open to teachers from Palmerston North, Manawatū, Rangitīkei and Horowhenua with first priority given to those teachers who are not involved in the Enviroschools programme,” she says

“We particularly want to connect with those schools/centres that would like to join the Enviroschools programme but cannot do so due to funding shortages, or those of who simply want to do more in the sustainability space with their tamariki. However, teachers from Enviroschools are also welcome to attend.”

Throughout the day attendees will have the chance to connect with a range of sustainability/environmental providers, hear from other schools/centres on their sustainability practices, collect tips and takeaway activities on a range of sustainability themes, and to connect with each other.

“We hope this hui is a platform to launch a sustainability collective of likeminded teachers in the wider Manawatū area who would like to meet regularly to learn more, support each other in embedding sustainability into the curriculum, and take action on sustainability issues.” says Ms Williams.

Registrations are required and there will be limited teacher release funding available for one teacher per school/centre to attend. For more information teachers can contact Ms Williams by emailing education@horizons.govt.nz
