The Great Tōtara Reserve Whānau Challenge
19 October 2026 - 11:48 amHorizons Regional Council is inviting families, friends and community members to discover Tōtara Reserve in a whole new way at The Great Tōtara Reserve Whānau Challenge on Saturday 7 November 2026, from 10.30am to 1.30pm.
Horizons biodiversity, biosecurity and partnerships manager Craig Davey says the event offers a fresh take on the reserve's popular community open days.
"After running an open day-style event previously, we wanted to try something different.
“We hope this event will encourage a greater appreciation for Tōtara Reserve and show the community how they can experience it.
“Participants are encouraged to form teams of up to four people and spend the time completing a range of fun and interactive challenges throughout the reserve.
“Teams can be made up of family members, friends, or a mix of both. Individuals are also welcome to take part.
“There will be ten challenges to complete across the day, with spot prizes up for grabs along the way.
“Entry costs $5 per adult, while children under 14 can participate free of charge.”
Tōtara Reserve Advisory Board chair Fiona Gordon, who is also deputy chair of Horizons Regional Council, says the event is all about bringing people together.
"The goal is to create a fun and memorable day where friends and families can experience Tōtara Reserve in a new way while learning about the work Horizons is doing to protect and enhance our environment.
"This is also a great opportunity to enjoy one of our region's most beautiful parks and tuck into a free barbecue lunch provided by Awahou School."
Horizons will also be providing free bus transport, with buses from Palmerston North, Feilding and Ashhurst.
When registering, participants can select their preferred pick-up location and reserve a seat on the bus.
Registrations are now open at www.eventfinda.co.nz Team registrations are limited to the first 50 teams.
