Arawhata Wetland Complex appeal resolved
29 May 2025 - 10:40 amThe appeal to the High Court against the granting of resource consents for the Arawhata Constructed Wetland Complex has been resolved between the parties and withdrawn.
Horizons Regional Council was granted resource consents in November 2024 to construct the wetland. These consents were subsequently appealed.
With the appeal now resolved, works will commence in accordance with the resource consents, with a focus on improving the water quality of Punahau Lake Horowhenua, while ensuring that any effects on groundwater are appropriately managed.
Horizons will now progress detailed design and construction for the 2025/26 construction season.
The wetland complex project has been boosted by the Mahi mō te Taiao – Jobs for Nature Horowhenua (Waiopehu) Freshwater Management Unit Water Quality Interventions project). This support comes from central government funding and is complemented by Horizons Regional Council (a total of $12.5 million; $11.2 million from central government and $1.3 million from Horizons).
Horizons will make no further comment on the appeal and its resolution.
