Horizons monitoring waterways as dry conditions continue

Five of the seven districts in the region are experiencing drier weather than average. As of 10 February, Ruapehu and Tararua have received 65% and 69% of average rainfall since November 1, respectively. Whanganui (75%), Rangitīkei (79%) and Horowhenua (86%) spring-to-summer rainfall is also below average.
 
Horizons Regional Council group manager strategy, regulation and science Dr Lizzie Daly says as of 14 February, multiple sites are either in low flow restrictions or nearing restriction levels.
 
“The prolonged period of dry weather means waterways are reaching the point where water abstraction needs to be carefully managed, especially as there is no significant rain currently forecast,” says Dr Daly.
 
“Many of our catchments are already reaching their minimum flows as prescribed in the One Plan.
 
“Water is essential for cultural, economic, environmental, and social wellbeing. It’s important that we maintain sufficient flow in waterways to protect ecosystems.
 
“River flows can be dynamic, so water take consent holders should regularly check their respective consent limits. Our Envirodata website and the WaterMatters section of our website can be used for checking flows at relevant sites.

Many district councils in the region already have water restrictions in place, including a total outdoor ban in Ākitio, and ‘odds and evens’ watering restrictions in Foxton, Foxton Beach, Levin, Ōhau, and Longburn.
 
“It is important everyone does their part to conserve water during the current weather pattern,” says Dr Daly.
